Protect Forever: Statewide Centennial Projects

NEW YORK STATE PARKS

The Centennial Story

Our story dates back to 1885, when New York State set aside land for the Niagara Reservation, setting the stage for the system we know and love today. It was in 1924 that the State formally unified its collection of parks and historic sites under the New York State Council of Parks, creating a shared vision for the future.

Since then, we’ve worked hand in hand with friends groups, conservation-minded individuals, and our dedicated staff to welcome visitors to our one-of-a-kind destinations year-round. From managing our beaches and campgrounds to volunteering as historic guides to fundraising in support of our properties, one of the keys to our success has been New York State residents who share in our mission.

Today, with more than 250 properties encompassing 360,000 acres of beaches, campgrounds, trails, forests, and so much more, we remain committed to protecting and promoting public access to the State’s rich natural resources.

So what’s next? Igniting the next century of recreation and stewardship – with you by our side.
